Requiring Check Out to Avoid Conflicts | SharePoint Tutorial pdf

Requiring Check Out to Avoid Conflicts

You can avoid conflicting updates by requiring that documents be checked out before they are edited. To do that:
1. From the SharePoint library, click Settings®Document Library Settings. SharePoint displays the Customize page.
2. Click Versioning Settings under the General Settings heading on the left side of the page and select Yes for Require Check Out section at the bottom of the page as shown in Figure. Click OK to close the page.

Why isn’t this setting the default? I think the answer is flexibility: Not all libraries have multiple authors, so requiring check out might seem burdensome. Also, anyone who can edit a file can always overwrite other’s changes intentionally; requiring check out just makes accidentally overwriting other’s work unlikely.
