The GUI:
The WebSphere administrative console has the following main areas:
=> Taskbar
=> Navigation tree
=> Workspace, including th e messages and help display areas.

Taskbar:
Taskbar is at the top of the console. Here you can see options like Logout, support and help
The welcome option contains the links to the information sources.
The logout option is to close your administrative console. If there are any unsaved changes at the time of logout it will ask you weather you want to save or discard
The help section provides with online help provided you have the internet connectivity.

Navigation Tree:
This will let you to list, select and manage all the components. As you see from the above figure, clicking on + sign will expand the section and clicking on – sign will collapse the section. The contents are displayed in the right side pane, called workspace.
Workspace:
The workspace, on the right side of the console, allows you to work with your administrative configuration after selecting an item from the console navigation tree.
You can change the console preference settings form system administration -> console settings -> preferences. This will give you a screen as shown below

=> Turn on WorkSpace Auto -Refresh specifies that the view automatically refreshes after a configuration change. If it is not selected, you must reaccess the page to see the changes.
=> No Confirmation on Workspace Discard specifies that a confirmation window be displayed if you select to discard the workspace.
=> Use default scope (Admin console node) sets the default scope to the node of the administration console.
=> Show banner displays the task bar at the top of the console.
=> Show descriptions displays help information in the right -hand portion of the workspace.
